As winter approaches, the maintenance of diesel generator sets has become a concern for many customers. The following are maintenance measures for diesel generator sets in autumn and winter, to help your diesel generator set survive the cold season safely.
Diesel generator fuel
In autumn and winter, due to low temperatures, the viscosity and flowability of diesel can increase, making it difficult for diesel to disperse, resulting in poor atomization and even deterioration of combustion, which reduces the power and economic performance of diesel engines. Therefore, light diesel with low pour point and good ignition performance should be selected in winter. Generally, it is required that the pour point of diesel engines should be 7-10 ℃ lower than the current seasonal low temperature in the local area.
Open flame assisted ignition
In areas with low temperatures, open flames can be used to assist in starting the machine, but the air filter must not be removed. Dip cotton yarn in Huaquan SC oil and ignite it to create a spark starter, which is then placed in the intake pipe to initiate combustion assistance. In this way, during the start-up process, the dust laden air from the outside will be directly sucked into the cylinder without filtering, causing abnormal wear of parts such as pistons and cylinders, and also causing rough operation of the diesel engine, damaging the machine.
Diesel generator set releases water too early or does not release cooling water
The generator runs at idle speed before shutting down. Wait until the cooling water temperature drops below 60 ℃ and the water is not hot to the touch before turning off the engine and draining the water. If the cooling water is drained too early, the body will suddenly shrink and crack when exposed to cold air at high temperatures. When releasing water, the remaining water in the body should be drained to prevent it from freezing and expanding, causing the body to crack. Shunjinxing recommends users to use antifreeze in any season, especially for generator sets. Because antifreeze not only serves a cooling function, but also protects the diesel engine.
Choose engine oil with low viscosity
When selecting engine oil for diesel generator sets in winter, it is advisable to choose engine oil with low viscosity as much as possible. After the temperature drops sharply, the viscosity of the engine oil will increase, which may have a significant impact on cold start and cause difficulty in starting the generator set. Therefore, it is recommended that you choose engine oil with lower viscosity in winter.
Startup method
In winter, it is advisable to assemble a water jacket heater for the generator if conditions permit, so that the machine can maintain a certain "body temperature" and operate easily at any time. Some operators often use the abnormal starting method of waterless starting (starting first, then adding cooling water) to quickly start the diesel generator set. This practice will cause serious damage to the machine and should be prohibited from use. The correct preheating method is to first cover the insulation blanket on the water tank, open the drain valve, continuously inject clean soft water at 60-70 ℃ into the water tank, touch the water flowing out of the drain valve with your hand and feel hot, then close the drain valve and start again.
Precautions for Low Temperature Load on Diesel Generator Sets
After the diesel generator set started and caught fire, some operators were eager to immediately put it into load operation. A diesel engine that has just caught fire, due to its low body temperature and high oil viscosity, makes it difficult for the oil to fill the moving friction surfaces, which can cause severe wear and tear on the machine. In addition, plunger springs, valve springs, and injector springs are also prone to breakage due to their "cold brittleness". Therefore, after the diesel generator starts and catches fire in winter, it should idle at low to medium speed for a few minutes, and then put into load operation when the cooling water temperature reaches 60 ℃.
